In House #1566: Reverend Horton Heat & Th'Legendary Shack Shakers in Jackson Hole


Today it's cowpunk, hellbilly, whatever you wanna call it, as the Reverend Horton Heat and the Legendary Shack Shakers play the first of two shows together at Jackson Hole's Mangy Moose. Hardly in need of an introduction, the Reverend Horton Heat released his (their) first full-length back in 1992. Over the course of nine albums during the past fourteen years, the band has become easily one of the most recognizable names in the sub-genre, small as it is. Their most recent release, not counting this past season's Christmas album, is 2004's Revival.

Th'Legendary Shack Shakers have recently spawned the third album in their comparatively short existence. Pandelerium serves up another batch of sizzling psychobilly, with sinister circus flavors and guest spots from Jello Biafra and the aforementioned Reverend. The Shakers are led by the crazed Col. J.D. Wilkes, who possesses a mean blues harp and a hellish wail.

The bill from hellbilly heaven stays in the region all week long reconvening tomorrow night in Jackson before the Shakers head up the road to Boise. The two meet up once again for a Friday night show in Salt Lake City. See the selected live & upcoming section for more details.

Randomly Found SXSW Sound

Something like 40,000 acts, many of which won the battle of the bands in whatever musical backwater it is that they hail from and thus, a free trip to Texas. The odd thing is, some of them are actually good. This is our quest for those bands.

In House #1565: Low & Damien Jurado in Salt Lake, New Built to Spill


A busy week for live music in the region kicks off tonight with an outstanding bill in Salt lake City as Low and Damien Jurado play In the Venue. The past year has been something of a tumultuous one for Duluth, Minnesota's Low. In a way, this was perhaps predicted by the sonic catharsis of The Great Destroyer, their most recent release out in February of last year. As you may recall, it featured the band kicking out the jams, so to speak, louder, harder and less beautiful than anything they had done before. Later in the year, longtime bassist Zak Sally left the band and Alan Sparhawk called a timeout of sorts to deal with his mental health. Nevertheless, the band is soldiering on, new bassist in tow, already in the middle of an extended tour.

The other part of the bill features Seattle-based singer-songwriter Damien Jurado, who has already reportedly been working on a new album to follow last year's solid On My Way to Absence. Jurado tends to excel at whatever stylistic shift he decides to make and has done so in the rootsy, singer-songwriter vein (Where Shall You Take Me?), as well as having successfully popped out (Waters Ave. S.) and rocked out (I Break Chairs).

Elsewhere, the matt pond pa/dios(malos) bill at Club Sound has apparently been cancelled, but is still on for tomorrow night at Boise's Bourbon St. Stage.

In House #1564: The Invasion Live, New Starlight Mints

You wouldn't guess it from listening to their self-titled debut release, but The Invasion hails from Boise, ID-- generally known more for Built to Spill and beards than it is Brit-pop. Neverthless, the young and unassuming quartet recorded an amazingly accomplished mini-album of songs that bring to mind the likes of Radiohead and the London Suede, sure, but also the Beatles and the Raspberries, to name a few. They first played southeast Idaho at last year's 5th Annual KISU Really Big Show and return this weekend for a show tomorrow night at the First National Bar in Pocatello. The Invasion joins us live in the studio today for a performance and interview.

In House #1563: Deadstring Brothers' Starving Winter Report, Iron & Wine Covers New Order


Starving Winter Report is the second full-length from the Deadstring Brothers, out this week on Bloodshot records. While the Sticky Fingers-era Rolling Stones comparisons are abundant and rather obvious, the Deadstring Brothers look to be more than just a cover band. Indeed, the addition on this second release of vocalist Masha Marjieh gives the band an element the Stones never had. Elsewhere, they channel the likes of Gram Parsons, the Band, Bob Dylan, and even early Jayhawks, if they must be reduced to influences. In reality, the Deadstring Brothers are one of the more interesting Americana-flavored acts to pop up in a while and deserve their own listen.

In House #1562: Destroyer's Rubies, Eels' Live with Strings


Dan Bejar's Destroyer released their fifth full-length album this week, entitled Destroyer's Rubies. Destroyer's output has always been interesting, if at times willfully difficult, but Rubies steps things up to a level of grandeur previously unseen from the band. Bejar's obtuse and schizophrenic lyrics are here encased in epic declarations of song, as in the nine-and-a-half minute opener, "Rubies," or the loose and meandering seven-and-a-half minute "Looter's Follies."

The release also continues the trend of New Pornographers releasing solid to oustanding albums, a trend which looks to be continuing in March with Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. It was largely Bejar's songwriting, of course, along with that of A.C. Newman, which made the New Pornographers' Twin Cinema one of the best releases of 2005. Destroyer's Rubies was released yesterday on the ever-wonderful Merge records.

In House #1561: Harper Live


Today's live in-studio guest is the Austrailian bluesman who simply goes by the name Harper. It's an apt enough moniker, as he's known for knowing his way around a harp-- that's a harmonica, for the uninitated. Originally from England, it was the unlikely locale of Perth, Austrailia where the blues first caught Harper's imagination. One would guess that it only seemed natural, given the backdrop, for him to flavor traditional blues with the addition of the didgeridoo, an instrument used by Austrailia's Aborigines. The result is an unlikely, if decidedly down under-flavored, form of blues. Harper's fifth and most recent studio release, Down to the Rhythm, marks his debut for the legendary Blind Pig records label, as well as the label's first international signing. Harper plays tonight at Michele's City Lights in Pocatello, ID, the first date on an extensive tour that seems him covering all corners of the U.S. over the next five months.

In House #1560: Ray Davies' Other People's Lives, Early Billy Bragg Reissued


Kinks frontman Ray Davies releases what is technically his first studio album in over twenty years tomorrow with the aptly-titled Other People's Lives. Davies has become something of a cult-figure over the past few years, particularly among indie musicians and fans. The fact that he's made his U.S. home in New Orleans and narrowly escaped death when he was shot and mugged there a couple of years ago has only added to his eccentric mystique-- as it has informed his songwriting on the new release. The master chronicler of British middle class life sounds as if he hasn't missed a beat on songs like "Next Door Neighbor," and "Things Are Gonna Change." With so many lackluster and aging musicians refusing to stop releasing tripe, it's refreshing to finally hear Davies return with a batch of songs that's every bit what one might expect.

Given the truly random appearances of the Random Five as of late, we're feeling like underachievers. Thus, we give you the, umm, super-sized version, the Biggie, if you will. 100% fat free and better-tasting, too. Plus, there's a wealth of stuff out there about now. Feast or famine, you know.

1- The new Crystal Skulls release is on the way! Outgoing Behavior is the follow-up to what was perhaps last year's most impressive debut. "Baby Boy" (MP3) will be included.

2- Speaking of new albums with April release dates, Irving returns with Death In the Garden, Blood On the Flowers, produced by Phil Ek, among others. "If You Say Jump, I Will Say No" (MP3) is from it.

3- One of the most wildly anticipated debuts of the year, at least from where I'm sitting, is Band of Horses' Everything All the Time, out in March on Sub Pop. The band features not horses, but Ben and Mat from dearly departed Carissa's Wierd (sic), among others. "The Funeral" (MP3) sounds glorious.

4- A change of pace now with another upcoming release: Josh Ritter's The Animal Years is out in the U.S. in April. "The Girl In the War" (MP3) is from it.

5- From the same end of the musical spectrum as Ritter comes Scott Miller & the Commonwealth, these days apparently based in Nashville. Citation is the upcoming release, out March 14th, and the follow-up to 2003's excellent Upside Downside. "Only Everything" (MP3) is included.

6- Upcoming from Jagjaguwar is an expansive new compilation from Simon Joyner entitled, appropriately enough, Beautiful Losers: Singles & Compilation Tracks, 1994-1999. Here's "One For the Catholic Girls" (MP3). Ah, Catholic girls.

7- This last one's a gem, combining two seemingly disparate but brilliant acts, Iron & Wine and New Order. Sam Beam & Co.'s cover of "Love Vigilantes" (MP3) comes from a recent iTunes exclusive EP entitled Live Session.

In House #1558: Hank Williams III's Straight to Hell, Willie Nelson's Gay Cowboy Song, Roseanne Cash


As one might gather, Hank Williams III is both the son of Hank Williams Jr. and the grandson of Hank Williams. Three albums into his own career, Hank III has more or less embraced the legacies of each and in many ways his music embodies both the chemical-dependence and the honky-tonk broken-heartedness found in those legacies. He's also drawn on the darker edges of those lives-- his grandfather's early self-destruction-aided death seems to be a common theme, in different ways, in his own music.

His latest, Straight to Hell, is due out at the end of the month after a lengthy delay, the story of which involves the album's "questionable content" and the refusal of a retail giant (Wal-Mart, one would guess) to carry it because of this. Anyway, Hank's latest batch of songs about drinkin', drugs and mean women is apparently going to be released in two versions to make everyone happy, though they may miss out on the biting if slightly juvenile attack on mainstream country, "Dick in Dixie."

I Am the Resurrection is the title of the new tribute album to the music of the influential guitarist John Fahey. Straight forward enough, but it's the contributors to this tribute where it gets interesting as it's something of a who's who of indie and underground folk artists who have undertaken the project. That being the case, some are obvious fits (M. Ward, Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart) while others surprise by their inclusion here (Grandaddy, Lee Ranaldo).

While Fahey became known for both his innovative technique and his dynamic and unpredictable compositions, the bulk of the re-creations here concentrate on the latter since few have Fahey-like chops to begin with. The result is a fresh-sounding batch of re-realizations. Calexico, Howe Gelb, and Peter Case, among others, also appear on the release, out this week on Vanguard records.

If you've never heard him before, singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson's ethereal vocals can be disarming at first. Indeed, Hanson's voice is such that one might mistake him for a female singer-songwriter if they didn't know any better. After several years fronting the band M.I.J., he took the solo route, releasing two full-lengths on the kill rock stars label, the most recent being last year's Jeff Hanson. Hanson serves it up warm and tender for a Valentine's Day show tomorrow night at Kilby Court in Salt Lake City.

For a change, there's plenty of live music to go around in the region this weekend-- especially if you come down on the folk and bluegrass side of things. First, on the singer-songwriter side of things comes Los Angeles based Jay Nash, hitting the character-laden Knotty Pine in Victor, ID tonight. Despite playing regularly around the L.A. scene, he's no stranger to southeast Idaho, having played in Lava Hot Springs and Pocatello a couple of times in the past few years. His latest full-length, some kind of comfort, shows off the talents of a number of L.A. artists while comparing favorably with some of Nash's biggest influences: Cat Stevens, Dylan, and the Dead.

Elsewhere, San Francisco's Hot Buttered Rum String Band brings their high-energy form of progressive bluegrass to Park City's Club Suede. A little bit Garcia & Grisman, a little bit McCoury & Blake, the band's most recent studio effort is 2004's In These Parts.

Texas-based singer-songwriter James McMurtry and his band play two shows in the area this weekend, hitting the Neurolux in Boise tonight and Club Suede in Park City tomorrow night. McMurtry's built up a reputation over the years as a talented, if moody, storyteller-- kind of a songwriting version of his father, author and screenwriter Larry McMurtry. James' latest is last year's Childish Things.

Meanwhile, if close to home is your bag, old-timey bluegrass is served at Portneuf Valley Brewing in Pocatello tonight with New South Fork. An area staple for five years running now, the band's authentic sound is best taken live. Their debut, Under the Piney Rose, came out last year.

And as if all of that were not more than enough, a late addition to today's show is the Bay Area band Free Peoples. The band brings their unique mix of bluegrass, jazz and latin rhythms-- at times sounding like Bela Fleck jamming with Calexico-- to the First National Bar in Pocatello.

It wouldn't necessarily be an overstatement to say that Scott McCaughey's Minus 5, originally dreamed up as a side act, have become the focus of McCaughey's creative output, whereas his regular gig as frontman of the Young Fresh Fellows has been put on the backburner. It doesn't hurt, one supposes, when he has talents like Wilco, Colin Meloy and Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson clamoring to help him out. And so it is that, besides the Minus 5 themselves, which at this point includes McCaughey, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and whomever happens to be filling in as the rhythm section that day, the eponymous new release from the band (also being billed The Gun Album) includes guest spots from a talented cast of thousands-- including everyone metioned above, plus John Wesley Harding, Kelly Hogan and John Moen. Surprisingly, as would be expected to happen in most such cases, the music doesn't suffer, the result being an at times twangy mix of the Beatles, Big Star and Buffalo Springfield (and those are just the B's). The new release came out this week on Yep Roc.

New York City-based Hem released their third album, entitled No Word From Tom, yesterday. To be exact, it's not necessarily a "new" release in that it's a collection of covers, oddities, outtakes and the like. But really, what a collection, as they tackle everything from classic R.E.M. ("So. Central Rain") to the Fountains of Wayne ("Radiation Vibe") to classic country ("Tennesse Waltz" and "Crazy Arms"), giving them all the slow and lovely Countrypolitan treatment for which Hem's originals have become known. The album also marks the first for the band on the Nettwerk label, who are quietly collecting an impressive stable of artists (Old Crow Medicine Show, the Be Good Tanyas, Clumsy Lovers and Abigail Washburn, among others). Also today, the solid new full-length from Canadian trio Elliott Brood. After seeing its original release last September, their debut Ambassador has just been re-released on Six Shooter records.

The seventh full-length from Belle & Sebastian, entitled The Life Pursuit, finds them back where they began (at least for U.S. listeners) on Matador records. The band, however, couldn't be more different from the heady days of If You're Feeling Sinister. Not necessarily better, certainly not worse, just different. Key components of the band's early days like Stuart David and Isobel Campbell are long gone. Meanwhile, Stuart Murdoch has completely transformed the band's sound to include all sorts of elements: blues, jazz, Motown and 60's pop among them. Indeed, The Life Pursuit takes the fresh new template the band unearthed on 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress and expands it even further. Yes, one might even say that the once sullen tweesters have become a.....read this right, party band (though the sulleness is perhaps just more subtle). The album's new out today on Matador.

Just a bit over two years since the premature death of Elliott Smith comes the appropriately-titled tribute, To: Elliott, From: Portland, out tomorrow.

The line-up finds fifteen Portland-based acts, some better known than others, interpreting and reinterpreting Smith's compositions. Some work better than others, and an all-out assault has already been undertaken by Smith devotees against some of the reworkings found here, notably Crosstide's blip and bleep take on "Angeles," though I'm sure Lifesavas' version of "Happiness" won't be spared either. On the positive side are some solid renderings of "Ballad of Big Nothing" (the Thermals), "Between the Bars" (Amelia), and "Division Day" (We Are Telephone). Other Portland notables include the Decemberists, Dolorean, Eric Matthews and Sean Croghan. The album is out on Expunged, more information is available here.

Friday Random Five (#16)


Yes, it's the return of the Random Five this week after a month hiatus with the first edition of the new year. Despite the break, we're still feeling a bit lazy about it, so we've taken an easy road to completion. Nevertheless, we're sure you'll enjoy what's here. To the weekend, then....

Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy recently wrapped up a solo tour with Laura Veirs. In fact, NPR provided a live broadcast of the tour's finale in front of 700+ at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Meloy's set was spot-on, and featured a good mix of old and new Decemberists material (though a bit light on Castaways & Cutouts-era stuff), as well as a couple of new things and some interesting covers-- including one from the new tour-only Colin Meloy Sings Shirley Collins EP. Once again, today it's a localized version of the show as Pocatello's Jory Dax Band join us in the studio for a performance and interview. The band is fronted by Jeff Young and features several veterans of the local scene, who have in the past been involved with such acts as Milagro, Elvis has Left the Building and others. The new act has so far enjoyed a successful run with a flavor that comes down decidedly on the blues side of things. The Jory Dax Band records a live album tonight at Portneuf Valley Brewing in Pocatello (8p.).

Local and regional bands, no matter where you're located, tend to come and go like high school significant others. It's no small feat, then, that Salt Lake City's Tolchock Trio celebrate six years as a band in 2006, and so far in grand style having recently won Salt Lake City Weekly's Showdown to SXSW, thus scoring a spot at the annual Austin, TX music fest. We were first introduced to them back in 2002, when they closed KISU's 3rd Annual Really Big Show. Even then, their energy and off-kilter beats were studied yet spontaneous and, in a word, tight. The last three years have only further solidified the band's music, as the Tolchock Trio has expanded into a quartet (though Tolchock Quartet just wouldn't have the same ring), and released two well-received full-lengths, the most recent being last year's Ghosts Don't Have Bones (2005, Exumbrella). Needless to say, the album has garnered positive reviews near and far, and the Pixies comparisons, among others, have flowed freely. The Tolchock Trio make just their second Pocatello appearance this weekend, as they play the First National Bar on Saturday night.

Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik hits Park City's Club Suede tonight in support of his fifth and latest full-length, White Limousine. Since arriving upon the alterna-pop scene back in 1996 with his eponymous debut, Sheik has traveled a decidedly less commercial route than that album may have implied. Instead, he's exhibited a penchant for making complicated, baroque-pop albums that seem to have grown more sparse each time out. The latest finds him continuing to follow his own muse, with far more spaces than pop melodies, once again tackling subjects like consumer culture and spirituality. White Limousine was released last week on Zoe records. As far as tonight's show goes, the bill is intriguing if schizophrenic as Salt Lake City's Will Sartain opens things up-- not necessarily a Duncan Sheik type, but nevertheless.
