Friday Random Five (#16)
Yes, it's the return of the Random Five this week after a month hiatus with the first edition of the new year. Despite the break, we're still feeling a bit lazy about it, so we've taken an easy road to completion. Nevertheless, we're sure you'll enjoy what's here. To the weekend, then....
Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy recently wrapped up a solo tour with Laura Veirs. In fact, NPR provided a live broadcast of the tour's finale in front of 700+ at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Meloy's set was spot-on, and featured a good mix of old and new Decemberists material (though a bit light on Castaways & Cutouts-era stuff), as well as a couple of new things and some interesting covers-- including one from the new tour-only Colin Meloy Sings Shirley Collins EP. Four of our random five this week, a full 80%, are taken from that performance.
1- Colin Meloy:
2- Colin Meloy: "Red Right Ankle" (MP3)
3- Colin Meloy:
4- Colin Meloy: "Barbra Allen" (MP3)
5- Our last selection this week comes from the new January EP from Massachussetts-based Bishop Allen. The band is releasing an EP a month until the release of their second full-length, Clementines, later in the year. Here's "Corazon" (MP3).
enjoy. rinse. repeat.
